A lovely meditation. Thank you. At our church the ashes are put on the back of the hand. Peace to you.

As one who came from a tradition that has an aversion to the Christian calendar and other similar constructs, I have always been suspicious about rituals such as you mentioned above. I am learning, thanks in part to voices such as yours, that God reminds us of who and whose we are through a variety of avenues. Thank you for this post, it is beautifully written and deeply moving.

Although we forget that "invisible cross on our foreheads" it is more evident to the world when our words and actions go against the teachings of the cross. "You know they are Christians by their love" - when we exhibit intolerance, when we refuse to forgive, when we take God out of our life, when we forget the price of the wooden cross and ignore our own invisible crosses the world sees our foreheads and asks "Why?"
